Coeliac disease

First described by the ancient Greek physician Aretaeus, coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine triggered by gluten – a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. The disease may affect people at any stage of life if they have a genetic predisposition to it. According to the Coeliac Society of Australia, 1% of the Australian population is affected although 80% don’t know they have it. The disease is under-diagnosed but recent advances in screening and awareness of the disease is increasing diagnosis and demand for good quality, tasty and nutritious gluten free products.
